Sweden 's scenery has a gentler charm than that of neighbouring Norway 's rugged coast. Much of Sweden is covered in forest, and there are thousands of lakes throughout Sweden.
The land, as well as its people, has an air of reserved calm, and while best known for its automotive and musical exports – Volvo and Abba are pretty much household names – a strong historical undertone bubbles close beneath the surface. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Stockholm.
On the south eastern coast of Sweden and spread across 24,000 islets Stockholm enjoys one of the most stunning locales of any capital city in the world. Over 30% of the city area is made up of waterways and another 30% is made up of parks and green spaces giving Stockholm perhaps the freshest air of any European capital. This natural oasis is complemented by the stunning Old Town , which was perfectly preserved by Sweden 's neutrality in World War II. The Old Town is the epicentre of the city, with countless hotels, bars, restaurants and shops.
